Nurses and Elderly Men in Pain

29 April 2010

A number of interesting studies are out there on men and pills.

A first to share, regarding elderly men.  A 1980s study on nursing wards found that male patients were given a higher number of pain pills than their female counterparts.  The nurses’ “consistent attitude was that if a male patient complained of pain it must serious because everyone knew that male patients were a tough lot and should be taken seriously.  On the other hand, they had a different attitude to their fellow females, who were generally considered by these nurses to make a great fuss about minor problems and therefore were to be brushed off with a minimal response” (Patrick Wall, Pain: The Science of Suffering [New York: Columbia UP, 2000], 66).
